Hi, my name is Emily, and I can’t get enough of this everything bagel seasoning!!!

If you’ve ever gone to a bagel shop and ordered an everything bagel, than you know just how delicious that seasoning is…aside from the bagel being good, of course.

The everything bagel seasoning is bursting with loads of flavor. It’s sesame-y, onion-y, garlicky, salty, crunchy…and so good.

Today, we aren’t talking about bagels…just the famous, everything but the bagel seasoning blend. Yes, it can go on a bagel , but it can also be used on so many more things than just bagels.

What is everything bagel seasoning?

It’s a seasoning blend containing a mix of the most popular flavors of bagel toppings. It’s salty, savory, garlicky, onion-y, and crunchy…and it’s the perfect way to add a ton of flavor to so many foods.

Seeds and spices in separate small bowls: caraway seeds, granulated garlic, sea sat, poppy seeds, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, and granulated onion

What’s in everything bagel seasoning?

As always, the full ingredient list, including measurements, is listed in the recipe card below, but let’s discuss them here for a better understanding.

  • white sesame seeds – for that delicious sesame flavor.
  • black sesame seeds – for more sesame goodness that adds a beautiful striking color to the mix. It’s okay if you can’t find black sesame seeds, you can simply replace them with more white sesame seeds.
  • poppy seeds – for a nice crunch.
  • caraway seeds – not always included in everything bagel seasoning mixes, but I really love it. It makes the seasoning blend reminiscent of rye bread. However, if you’re not a fan, you can easily leave them out.
  • minced, dried garlic – for a garlicky flavor. So good.
  • minced, dried onion  – for a hint of onion.
  • maldon sea salt – for seasoning. A mild, flaky sea salt is ideal in this recipe. Maldon salt (or other finishing sea salt) has large, flaky crystals so that you season your seasoning mixture just enough to add a subtle salty crunch to whatever you’re using the bagel seasoning on, but without overpowering it.

That’s all you need to make this super easy, but super delicious, seasoning mix.

Why make your own everything bagel seasoning?

You can customize the flavors however you like.

For me, that was adding in caraway seeds. I love the flavor of caraway seeds, but I have yet to see a store bought brand of everything bagel seasoning blend that contains caraway seeds.

Of course, make it your own. If you prefer more sesame seeds, add more. Or, if you prefer a more garlicky mix, add more dried garlic. You literally can’t go wrong with this one.

Besides, I always have these seeds and spices on hand anyways, so it’s easy to whip up my own custom, blend, whenever I need it.

Is everything bagel seasoning healthy for you?

Yes.

Like a lot of seasoning blends, it’s a low calorie way to add a lot of flavor to foods.

This particular seasoning mix has a little health bonus, due to all the seeds. Seeds are packed with fiber, healthy fats, protein, and vitamins and minerals. Even though we’re only using a small amount, I’ll take the added nutrition benefits where I can get them.

What do you use everything bagel seasoning for?

Why, bagels of course! Try this using this seasoning blend on my Greek yogurt bagels.

Description

Everything bagel seasoning is a mix of seeds, and spices, that is most known to go on bagels. This versatile seasoning blend can go on so much more than just bagels. Try it on popcorn, eggs, avocado toast, and more.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 teaspoons roasted white sesame seeds
  • 4 teaspoons roasted black sesame seeds (see notes)
  • 4 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • optional: 4 teaspoons caraway seeds (see notes)
  • 2 teaspoons minced, dried garlic
  • 2 teaspoons minced, dried onion
  • 2 teaspoons maldon sea salt (see notes)

Instructions

  1. Mix: Add all ingredients to a small jar, or bowl, shake or mix the spices together until well combined.
  2. To use: Use to season the outside of my Greek yogurt bagels, crackers, or other similar homemade, baked goods. You can also sprinkle it onto avocado toast, popcorn, baked potatoes, eggs, roasted vegetables, hummus, or whatever savory thing you want to add extra flavor to. You could also sprinkle it onto fish before cooking. The possibilities are endless.
  3. To store: Store the everything bagel seasoning in an air-tight jar, or container. Store at room temp for  up to 6 months. The seasoning won’t go bad, but it can lose it’s flavor over time.

Notes

roasted sesame seeds: you can buy your sesame seeds already roasted, this is what I recommend getting. You don’t really want ones that are raw, they don’t taste very flavorful.

black sesame seeds: if you can’t find black sesame seeds, than replace them with more white sesame seeds.

caraway seeds: Caraway seeds aren’t seen in most everything bagel seasoning blends (store-bought, or homemade recipes), but I found that I really love the extra flavor it added to my bagels. It reminds me of eating rye bread. If you’re not a fan of caraway seeds, feel free to leave them out, or reduce the amount. Keep in mind that the caraway seeds are a little tough before they are toasted, so if you’re adding the caraway seeds to raw things (such as avocado toast), you might want to either omit the caraway seeds, or toast them for real quick before making your everything bagel seasoning blend.

How to toast the caraway seeds: Add the caraway seeds to a small, dry skillet and toast on medium heat, just until  they begin to become fragrant (about 3 to 5 minutes) – stir frequently. Be careful not to burn them. Once toasted, remove them from the pan, and allow them to cool completely before adding them to your everything bagel seasoning mix.

maldon sea salt: I highly recommend using maldon sea salt (or another chunky, flaky finishing sea salt) in your seasoning blend. The salt crystals are very chunky, and not very salty. This gives the seasoning just enough saltiness without overpowering whatever you’re topping the seasoning with.  Keep in mind, this is a finishing salt, so it will last you a long time. It’s what I use whenever I want to add a touch of salt to cookies, or other desserts.
