Welcome, Friends!
Hi, I’m Emily and welcome to Robust Recipes.
I grew up in a family of foodies who sit around the dinner table exclaiming how good the food is as they savor each bite. Then for days afterwards they continue to talk about how good the food was.
Once I was on my own I quickly learned that if I wanted good food I needed to make it myself. Over the years I have learned to cook through a combination of instruction from my mom, Food Network, and good old fashioned trial and error.
I graduated from college with a BA in Creative Writing. Soon after I graduated I discovered the world of food blogging. I found that I deeply enjoyed the real-life storytelling that surrounds food. Cooking food plus writing about it soon became my dream job. In 2014 I took the leap and decided to become a full- time food blogger and I’ve never looked back!
My husband Paul is my official taste-tester and tech adviser. We live in Iowa where we own a cute little 1910 house that keeps us in constant rotation of projects.
My mission is to share healthy, wholesome, feel-good food with you. I want to give you possibilities and options, so that you don’t end up eating cereal for dinner.
The type of food I share on Robust Recipes reflects the type of food that I most enjoy. My style of food is a variety of foods made using real, wholesome, in-season ingredients. Food is what fuels our bodies, sustains our minds, and keeps us going. This is why I do my best to create healthy, balanced recipes without processed ingredients. I feel at my best when I eat wholesome meals that are loaded with veggies.
Most of the time, I do eat healthy. However I believe moderation is the key when it comes to food. The moment I tell myself I’m not going to have desserts for a week I end up eating an entire tub of ice cream in one sitting.
I have an obsession for desserts, especially dark chocolate. It is my life goal to make desserts that taste decadent and that are a little healthier than your mainstream dessert. I tend to feel more balanced while still feeling satisfied when I have these types of treats.
Most of my dessert recipes are refined-sugar-free. Instead they are sweetened with honey, coconut sugar, dates, or maple syrup. These natural sweeteners are lower on the glycemic index than your typical white sugar. Since I have started Robust Recipes I have mostly cut refined sugar out of my life, and my energy and concentration levels have greatly improved. I also feel more balanced, and I don’t get hangry very much anymore. Paul will attest to this. My hope is that my dessert recipes will help you indulge in a slightly healthier way.
A lot of my recipes are gluten-free. Although I do occasionally eat gluten I have several friends and family who have Celiac Disease or are gluten-sensitive. What fun is making food if you can’t share it with your loved ones? So, most of my recipes are gluten-free or gluten-free adaptable.
You will find a variety of recipes ranging from comfort foods, to my twist on ethnic foods, to the more indulgent recipe that feeds your soul. Most of them are easy to make, healthy and always tasty.
Some of my favorite things in life are getting lost in a good book, traveling, hiking, running, yoga, meditation, tea, dark chocolate, Indian food, seafood, long summer days, and my fur baby, Granite.
Thank you for stopping by Robust Recipes. I can’t wait to see you here again!
Hugs,
Emily
