I know, I know sweet potato dessert fries sounds a little strange…but trust me, friends you won’t want to miss this one.
Tender sweet potato fries baked with a generous dusting of coffee grounds, then you dip it in a super delicious chocolate sauce. It’s a mocha experience, with a sweet potato twist.
And it is delightful.
This post was originally published in November of 2014. I remembered the recipe being super delicious, but of course back in 2014 I was just starting to learn how to take appetizing photos of food.
Also, this recipe for coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries was recently published in a book. YES! One of my recipes was published in a book!!!! How cool is that?!
Naturally, updating this post had to happen!
This recipe for coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries was published in “New Orleans Coffee, a Rich History” by Suzanne Stone. How fun!!!
Suzanne reached out to me several months ago and asked if she could include this very recipe for in her book. Although her book is not a cookbook she included a section featuring recipes that use coffee. I was honored, so of course I said YES!
If you have been following my blog for any length of time you may have picked up that I don’t like coffee. I mean, I do like it, if it’s sweetened with so much sugar and cream and chocolate that it automatically turns into dessert. I like it if it’s roasted with sweet potato fries and dipped in chocolate, I love coffee ice cream…but I do not like black coffee at all.
Ironic, isn’t it?
I also toured two coffee plantations on a study abroad trip to Costa Rica during college. For someone who doesn’t drink coffee I know a lot about how it’s made. I even got to eat the coffee fruit.
And half of you are like, what’s coffee fruit? Google it!
And no, it doesn’t taste anything like coffee. More like a grape lol.
Anyways, how cool is the internet? I post a recipe way back when, it barely gets any traffic, and then someone finds it and wants to include it in their book about coffee?!!
The best!
So, about these coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries. It’s simple. Sweet potatoes that are coated in coffee grounds, baked, and then dipped into a super easy to make, and delicious chocolate sauce.
I mean what’s not to love about that experience?
Paul is pretty much obsessed with these sweet potato dessert fries. And he is the coffee lover of the our house hold. He is still trying to get me to like coffee. Sorry, not gonna happen.
But, roasted on these sweet potato dessert fries? YES Please! Do I really have to share? HA!
The original recipe for these coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries used melted dark chocolate that I drizzled on top of the fries. This time I wanted a less messy, more chocolate sauce like approach. So, I tweaked my vegan chocolate frosting recipe that you all love so much, ever so slightly, to make a dip able sauce.
OMG it is so good!!! Say yes to licking the spoon and the bowl and your fingers after making this recipe…it’s going to happen. Just accept it!
What’s great about these coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries is that there is not much added sugar to them. Except for 3 tablespoons of maple syrup in the chocolate sauce, there is no added sugars. Just the natural sweetness of the sweet potato fries! They are also naturally vegan, dairy free, and gluten free!
Oh, how wonderful nature is. Thank you for providing us with naturally sweet, nutrient dense sweet potatoes that we can turn into baked fries and call them dessert!
Actually, I remember loving these sweet potato dessert fries so much that I created a more recent recipe for chocolate coffee granola that uses coffee grounds in the same way – baked right into the granola, along with cocoa powder. When eaten with milk it turns everything into a delicious creamy mocha situation. LOVE!
I hope you enjoy these coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries as much as we do. They are so much fun!

Description
Coffee roasted sweet potato dessert fries is a fun and healthy dessert. Sweet potato fries covered in coffee grounds and served with a chocolate sauce for dipping.
Ingredients
sweet potato fries
- 2 sweet potatoes, peeled
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil or olive oil
- 2 to 3 tablespoons coffee grounds (see notes)
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
chocolate sauce
- 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- pinch of salt
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 3 to 4 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk
Instructions
- Prepare: Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare 1 extra large rimmed baking sheet (or two regular large ones) by lining them with parchment paper or a silpat mat, set aside. Cut the peeled potatoes into 1/2 inch thick fries, trying your best to keep them as even as possible.
- Mix sweet potato fries: Add the sweet potato fries to a large mixing bowl. Add the oil, coffee grounds, salt, and cinnamon – toss until the fries are well coated.
- Bake: Transfer the fries to the prepared baking sheet(s). Arrange them so that the fries are lying in a flat layer and aren’t touching. Bake for 15 minutes, flip the fries using tongs and bake another 10 to 15 minutes. They are done when the fries are fork tender and the edges are slightly crispy. Allow the fries to cool 5 mins.
- Make the chocolate sauce: Make the sauce while the fries are baking. To a small mixing bowl add the cocoa powder and salt, stir to remove any lumps in the cocoa powder. Add the maple syrup, coconut oil, vanilla, and almond milk. stir until smooth and creates. Add 1 tablespoon more of milk if you want a thinner sauce, the sauce will thicken up as it sits.
- Serve: Transfer the fries to a serving platter or plate and transfer the chocolate sauce to a small bowl. Serve hot with the chocolate sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes
Coffee: You can use decaf coffee grounds if you want to avoid caffeine.
Crispiness of fries: The fries aren’t very crispy because of the way they cook with the coffee grounds on them, the edges can get crispy though. Where it lacks in crispy texture these fries make up for in flavor.
Leftovers: This recipe is best eaten when fresh but if you have leftovers then store the chocolate sauce and fries in separate containers. Reheat the fries in a 400 degree oven for 15 minutes, or until warmed through. Gently heat the chocolate sauce in the microwave and thin out with a little more milk, if needed.
