About a month ago I had a girls’ weekend trip to Minneapolis! Yes, it was a month ago – how does life just move so fast?! But this is exactly the reason why I want to share with you about my girls’ weekend in Minneapolis – because it’s super important to take the time to slow down and spend time with your friends. Plus, I really enjoyed writing about my whitewater rafting trip in Colorado!
A little back story: these 4 girls and I were roommates in college, my senior year, their junior year. Well to be exact, one of the girls didn’t technically live with us, but she was at our house so often that we proudly nicknamed her our “honorary roommate”. The 5 of us have been doing a girls’ weekend every other summer pretty much since we graduated college. I think it’s really special that we have gone on these girls’ weekends. It’s a fun way to sort of relive sharing a bedroom (or two) and one bathroom just like we did in our college days – yet in a more sophisticated, grown-up-one-of-us-just-turned-30 kind of way (that’s me BTW; I’m the oldest in our group!) We talk about college memories, jobs, houses, grad school, our husbands, weddings, kids – we do each others’ hair, we share jewelry, we spend 5 hours shopping at Mall of America because that’s what you do when you’re with your girls. We take the time to do the girly things that we don’t get the chance to do as much anymore because LIFE. At the risk of being sappy, we make another memory for ourselves that we will reminisce about later. Don’t get me wrong, I love my trips with Paul and with my family (both sides). All of them are special in their own way. BUT there is something almost refreshing, and a little bit mischievous about spending a weekend with just girls.
You guys, we planned this weekend getaway amongst 5 busy ladies’ schedules: around wedding planning, work schedules, school schedules, kids’ schedules, vacation schedules, and everything in between! Sometimes it’s hard to make it all work out, but I am so thankful that we are committed to carving out time to spend together every other year. Because we all know how time slips away from us way too easily. I love that I have this space here on my little food blog where I can pause from writing about recipes and write about girls’ weekends and whitewater rafting. I can share, I can document the fun times.
I want to encourage you to make plans for a friends’ weekend away. For us, that’s a no-boys-allowed kind of weekend. But for you, it may be a couples’ weekend, or a guys’ weekend, or a cousins’ weekend, anything! All it takes is one quick Facebook group message, text, or email to get the ball rolling. Sometimes that’s the hardest part, to ACTUALLY initiate the planning – not just think about it, but to do it! Thanks, Ashley, for being the initiator this year! Seriously, just find a way to make it happen. You will be so glad you did!
We choose a different location each time for our girls’ weekend. In the past we went to Chicago and Door County, Wisconsin. This year in Minneapolis we enjoyed our city view from the nice hotel with plush white beds and a fun bathroom with a vanity! We enjoyed several delicious meals around town, spent time encouraging each other to buy that pretty new necklace/scarf/dress at the Mall of America. BTW if you haven’t been to Minneapolis, you could literally spend an entire weekend just at the Mall of America and still not see it all – rollercosters, games, a water ride, so many restaurants, and of course all of the stores you would ever need to see! The place is HUGE!
The weekend went way too fast, as weekends always do – but it was another memory in the books!
If you are not one of my obligated family members, or friends who were involved in this trip, and you read this entire post, thank you! I hope you enjoyed the pictures and glimpses at the things that make my heart happy! 🙂
