Do you ever realize very last minute when you’re making dinner that you want a side vegetable, but you’re out of fresh veggies?

That’s how these Indian spiced peas were born. I was making my Instant Pot creamy lentil curry and began scrounging around in our freezer for some frozen veggie….which I don’t usually love on their own. Especially peas, I like peas in things, but on their own they’re just a pile of mushy green things.

While my entree was cooking away in the instant pot – the best for multi-tasking in the kitchen – I decided to cook the peas in a skillet rather than the microwave. Huge game changer in texture, guys!!!

And while I was at it I decided to saute some onion up first and add some Indian spices since my entree was a curry dish. AND OMG these Indian spiced peas are a life changing way for me to enjoy peas!!!

Indian spiced peas still have a nice crunch to them, thanks to cooking them in the pan. The garam masala Indian spice blend adds a hint of warming spice that goes nicely with the sweet peas. Also, that sauteed onion and a good dose of salt and pepper really takes this dish over the top!

All you need to make these Indian spiced peas is one pan, 20 minutes (preferably while your entree is cooking)….

….and a few simple ingredients:

  • butter (or coconut oil to keep vegan)
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • garam masala (a traditional Indian spice blend, found in the Asian section of your grocery store)
  • 1 pound bag frozen peas – straight from the freezer
  • salt and pepper

That’s it my friends!

The next time you need a quick side dish to get something green on the table you can whip these Indian spiced peas up!

Description

Indian spiced peas are a super easy and delicious side dish to serve with any Asian inspired entree. The only require one pan, and a few simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon butter (see notes)
  • 1/2 large onion, chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garam masala (see notes)
  • 1 pound (16 ounce) bag of frozen green peas
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Saute onions:ย Heat a large nonstick pan over medium high heat. Melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and saute until translucent and tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garam masala and cook another minute.
  2. Cook the peas:ย Add the bag of frozen peas to the pan of onions, turn the heat up to medium high. Cook, stirring occasionally, just until the peas become defrosted and are warmed through, yet they should still have a good crunch to them – about 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with the salt and pepper – taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Serve:ย Serve immediately as a side dish to any Asian inspired meal. See a list of recipe ideas in the blog post.

Notes

Vegan/dairy free:ย To keep this recipe vegan and dairy free use coconut oil instead of butter.

garam masala:ย Garam masala is a traditional Indian spice blend. You can often find it in the Asian section of your grocery store, or buy itย  on Amazon.

This recipe is especially delicious served with Instant pot creamy lentil curry.
