Easy Indian Spiced Peas (20 Minutes)

Description

Indian spiced peas are a super easy and delicious side dish to serve with any Asian inspired entree. The only require one pan, and a few simple ingredients.


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter (see notes)
  • 1/2 large onion, chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon garam masala (see notes)
  • 1 pound (16 ounce) bag of frozen green peas
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


Instructions

  1. Saute onions: Heat a large nonstick pan over medium high heat. Melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and saute until translucent and tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garam masala and cook another minute.
  2. Cook the peas: Add the bag of frozen peas to the pan of onions, turn the heat up to medium high. Cook, stirring occasionally, just until the peas become defrosted and are warmed through, yet they should still have a good crunch to them – about 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with the salt and pepper – taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Serve: Serve immediately as a side dish to any Asian inspired meal. See a list of recipe ideas in the blog post.

Notes

Vegan/dairy free: To keep this recipe vegan and dairy free use coconut oil instead of butter.

garam masala: Garam masala is a traditional Indian spice blend. You can often find it in the Asian section of your grocery store, or buy it  on Amazon.

This recipe is especially delicious served with Instant pot creamy lentil curry.
