Description

Mulled White Wine is a quick and easy recipe to make. It is white wine infused with apple, pear, orange, and some warming spices. It is the perfect cocktail to warm you up on a cold winter evening.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 bottle dry wine (I used Chardonnay, and it was an inexpensive bottle since it’s going to be sweetened with honey and fruit)
  • 1 sweet, firm apple, sliced (I used Gala)
  • 1 ripe pear, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 1 inch ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup white rum (optional but recommended since a little of the alcohol cooks out of the wine)
  • 1 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • Extra slices of fruit for garnish, if desired

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized stock pot with a tight-fitting lid combine all of the ingredients, except for the honey. Stir to combine.
  2. Cover and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it reaches a boil reduce it to a simmer, keeping the lid on, and simmer for 10 minutes. Be careful not to let it come to a boil again; if it boils too long all of the alcohol will be cooked out.
  3. Immediately remove from the heat. Strain the mixture with a fine mesh sieve; discard the aromatics. Return the mixture to the pot and taste-test. Stir in honey one tablespoon at a time, tasting as you go until you reach your desired sweetness.
  4. Ladle into desired serving glasses. Garnish with sliced fruit, cinnamon sticks, cloves, or star anise pods, if desired. Serve immediately.
  5. If you want to make this ahead of time, or you have leftovers, make sure all of the aromatics have been removed; otherwise they will become too strong if left in the wine any longer. Store the mixture in the fridge. Gently reheat the mixture on the stove just until it’s warm. Do not allow it to come to a boil.
