HUMMUSSSSS!!! My true love!
I haven’t shared a new hummus recipe in a while. How dare I?!?!
It’s time my friends, for this ultra smoky, slightly spicy chipotle black bean hummus!
Yes, we are making hummus with something other than chickpeas…is it still called hummus? I say yes! Why not? Food rules are meant to be broken.
I guess the other option is to call it black bean dip but it’s got that thick, rich, starchy hummus texture…it’s not as runny as what I think of a dip to be. So we are going with hummus, sound good?!
Plus there is tahini paste in it, so that pretty much means it’s hummus.
Yes, I probably spend way too much time thinking of what to call my recipes. I have to think about what google likes, and what to name the URL, and what the keyword should be and blah blah blah!!! You’re not here for SEO tips, you’re here for a tasty chipotle black bean hummus recipe!
And that’s exactly what you’ll get!
This chipotle black bean hummus recipe is so easy to make. Throw everything in a food processor and blend away until smooth – 10 minutes and you’re done!
If you’re a huge fan of smoky, spicy flavors than this black bean hummus has your name written all over it. Black beans kind of have a smoky, robust flavor to them that goes well with the smoky chipotle peppers. Plus I added in smoked paprika (one of my faves) for extra smoky goodness and cumin, because cumin is a must in hummus!
How many times can I use the word smoky in a sentence?!?! Smoky, smoky, SMOKY!!!! My creative writing degree hates me for all of the repetitiveness right now ha!
Anyways….
Instead of lemon juice I used lime juice for a slight tang that won’t overpower the chipotle flavor. Tahini paste is still in there to make this hummus rich and creamy – love you tahini paste!
I like to eat this chipotle black bean hummus with tortilla chips. Although I am normally a huge fan of eating my hummus with as many veggies as possible this black bean hummus has such a strong flavor that that it will overpower most veggies. Except for cucumbers. I also like cucumbers with this black bean hummus because it gives my burning mouth relief and blends well with the other flavors of the hummus.
My advice is to serve this black bean chipotle hummus with both cucumber slices and tortilla chips – best of both worlds.
Chipotle black bean hummus has party vibes written all over it. There are no limits as to what kind of party you could serve this at, fall, winter, summer, spring. Inside or outside, it doesn’t matter it will be hit with anyone who loves a little spice in their life! ha!
It would also be a great addition to any packed lunch – school or work or picnics alike. Basically you can’t go wrong with this chipotle black bean hummus! Really, can you ever go wrong with any kind of hummus at any moment?! Absolutely not!
Hummus is always a good idea. Always!

Description
Chipotle black bean hummus is a spicy, smoky hummus that’s perfect for lunch or any party. Serve it with tortilla chips or cucumbers. Only takes 10 minutes to make!
Ingredients
- 1 can blacck beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce – + 1 teaspoon of the sauce
- 1 to 2 teaspoon smoked paparika
- 3/4 teaspoon cumin
- 1 garlic clove
- Juice of 1 lime
- 2 tablespoons tahini paste (sesame butter)
- salt to taste (at least 1/4 teaspoon)
- For serving
- tortilla chips
- sliced cucumber
Instructions
- Blend: Place all of the ingredients the bowl of a food processor. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute. Add 1 tablespoon water if it’s too dry – you may not need it depending on how juicy your lime is.
- Finish: Taste and adjust seasonings as needed – more smoked paprika for more smoky flavor or more chipotle sauce for more spice.
- Serve: Serve with tortilla chips and or cucumber slices for dipping. I like both because the chips allow the full flavor of the spicy and smokiness to come through while an occasional cucumber helps to cool off the heat.
