Description

Red wine frozen sangria is a fruity sangria in slushy form. Red wine blended with mixed berries, and orange ice cubes to create the ultimate summertime frozen cocktail.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • For the frozen cubes
  • 1 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 1/4 cup dry red wine (I used cabernet sauvignon)
  • remainder of the sangria
  • 1 1/2 cups dry red wine
  • 2 cups frozen mixed berries (I used cherries, strawberries, and blueberries)
  • Optional 1 to 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or agave nectar
  • Optional garnishes
  • orange slices
  • strawberries
  • cherries or blueberries on a skewer

Instructions

  1. Freeze the cubes:: 8 hours before you want to make this drink pour the orange juice into an ice cube tray and the 1 1/4 cup red wine into a separate ice cube tray. Freeze until frozen solid. Note that the wine cubes will freeze but be slightly soft still.
  2. Blend: When you are ready to make the frozen sangria add the 1 1/2 cups of red wine (not frozen) to your blender followed by the mixed berries, orange juice cubes, and red wine cubes, blend on high until everything is well blended and smooth. Taste and add 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or agave nectar, this will depend on how sweet your fruit happens to be, or just your taste preference.
  3. Serve: Pour into serving glasses and serve immediately. Garnish with fresh fruit such as orange slices, strawberries, cherries or blueberries, if you wanna get a little fancy. If you have a little leftover in your blender just pop it in the freezer to refill glasses.

Notes

Keep in mind that prep time does not reflect the 8 hours required to freeze the orange cubes and wine cubes. It is best to freeze the cubes the previous day.

Berries: I found a bag that had a mix of blueberries, cherries, and strawberries. You could add any proportion of those 3 berries you want. I would stay away from blackberries and raspberries because the seeds won’t blend up as easily.
